In the 1950s, when I was still a child and fascinated by the world of grownups, I was already drawn to rugs: they even played important roles in my favourite games. The borders and central designs were the playing field, and each colour had a special role in my imagination. One day, I gave the entire contents of my piggybank to my father and asked him to "invest the money" in a rug for me. The next day, he came home with a beautiful Beluchi rug, just for me!. I was happy and immediately put it down in the foyer because I wanted everyone to walk on it. I never did find out if my savings were enough to cover the entire cost of my very first rug, or if my father had "made them suffice"! The fact is, that some time later when I asked him to sell it for me so that I could buy a bigger one I made a handsome profit indeed!

The Elyasy family has been in the Persian and Oriental rug business for 3 generations. It began at the Mashad Bazaar around 1920 and has reached the web, via stores in Florence, Forte dei Marmi and Prato. The Elyasy name has been a household word in Tuscany ever since 1964 when Mehdy opened his first Italian store in the centre of Florence.
