SHIRAZ
Shiraz, also known as the "city of roses" because of its beautiful gardens has made the area famous since the 7th century A.D. During the latter half of the 18th century the capital of the kingdom was transferred here, attesting to its commercial and cultural importance. It is located in the south, in the Farsi region, in the vicinity of the Zagros Mountains.
Shiraz rugs are made throughout the district and are linked to tribal and nomadic traditions. They are made entirely of wool, with geometric and stylized designs and a relatively limited density of knots. The colours are warm, mainly shades of red and orange. Even though the workmanship may be a bit coarse, Shiraz rugs are often made of excellent quality wool with a beautiful sheen that makes them very attractive - and limits their costs. The finer Shiraz rugs made with even better wool are known as Shiraz Mecca, this name comes from the fact that pilgrims would order fine rugs from the most skilled craftsman to take as offerings to the holy city.
