Josan - Persian and oriental rug guide

JOSAN

Josan is in a valley southwest of Malayer and its name is linked to some of the finest rugs in the area. In fact, Josans are finely knotted with Persian-type asymmetrical knots. Furthermore, the local artisans' age-old traditions in dyeing wool contribute to the sheen, indeed, some of the colours are still created with natural dyes. The pattern of these rugs is a slightly stylized interpretation of the medallion floral motif we find in Central Persia and specifically, Sarough. Sometimes, as a tribute to the Malayer tradition, the background is decorated with tiny herati. The most commonly used colours are red, cream and a very deep shade of blue.
