Kars - Persian and oriental rug guide

KARS

The city of Kars is located in north-eastern Turkey near the Armenian and Georgian borders. It is a very old city with a great rug-making tradition, in fact there are carpets from the 16th century that were made here. Contemporary Kars rugs are knotted entirely in wool, usually have a high pile and limited density of knots. The patterns are geometric and are strongly influenced by styles from nearby Armenia and other Caucasian provinces. There are rugs with large butterfly medallions like those from Sevan, or star medallions that resemble the Fachralus and even cross-shaped medallions like those on Chelabard rugs. The borders, too, reveal Caucasian inspiration, with dentate leaves as a common pattern. However, they are easily distinguished from the Caucasian rugs because the Kars colours are softer and even pastels, in addition the wool is coarser and duller with respect to the quality used in the Caucasus.
