Melas - Persian and oriental rug guide

MELAS or MILAS

The city of Melas is located in western Turkey, not far from Ephesus, and is the collection centre for rugs made in a very large area. Textile production here is relatively recent, that is dating from around the middle of the 19th century. Contemporary Melas rugs are made entirely of wool with flat, symmetrical knots. They are quite thick, with a thick, medium high pile. Often the contours of the designs are sheared lower creating a three-dimensional effect. The colours are soft: shades of yellow, orange and dusty pink. The designs are stylized and geometric, with large and airy patterns that create a feeling of light and space in the rooms where they are placed.
