Borchialu - Persian and oriental rug guide

BORCHIALU

Borchialu was the name of a Mongol clan that belong to the army of Genghis Khan's successor, Hulaku, and settled in the area south of Hamadan in the 13th century. In the Caucasus there is a village of the same name and may share its origins even though there are no identifiable links between the rugs made in the two places. The Borchialu are among the best rugs made in the Hamadan area. The designs are traditionally curving with large round medallions that often extend into two pendants and elaborate corner-pieces. The background, usually cream-colour, is decorated with compositions of small, flowering branches or, more often, with the classical herati motif. These rugs, like many others from the area are made with excellent quality, soft and shiny wools.
