Chelabard - Persian and oriental rug guide

CHELABARD

A special type of rug has been made in the vicinity of Barda in Karabagh since the second half of the 19th century. Over the years merchants have given these rugs unusual names inspired by their distinctive pattern. Chelabard rugs are also known as Adler Kazak, Eagle Kazak or "Sunburst Kazak" because the large medallions recall a two-headed heraldic eagle, or a shining sun. Actually, the design has quite different origins and is probably an offshoot of much earlier floral patterns that evolved over time into these cruciform medallions. Collectors eagerly seek 19th nineteenth century Chelabards: they are among the most prized of all antique Caucasian rugs.
