Gabbeh - Persian and oriental rug guide

GABBEH or Gabeh

Originally, Gabbeh rugs were made by the Fars, a nomadic population, for use in their tents and as covers. They were not elaborately decorated, sometimes they were made in solid colours; the knotting was coarse and the pile very high (even up to 3-4 cm), therefore, they were also very heavy. There was no trade in these rugs since they were considered too coarse to have any commercial value. They have recently been "rediscovered" and are admired precisely for their simplicity that is perfectly suited to modern concepts in interior designs that are based on linearity and essentiality.
