Gherla - Persian and oriental rug guide

GHERLA

Gherla rug production has virtually disappeared, even though it flourished in the 1970s when Persian rugs were subject to 38% VAT. Since then, under the guidance of Persian master-rug-makers production was developed in the then communist countries of Eastern Europe: Albania, Bulgaria, and Romania were three nations with the greatest output. The Gherlas (made in Romania) are very sturdy rugs with even, though not particularly fine  knotting; the colours are delicate and the price/quality ratio is excellent, making them ideal for  highly trafficked areas where good taste and strength are essential.
