Gouchan - Persian and oriental rug guide

Gouchan is located northwest of Mashad near the border with Turkmenistan. The market offers rugs made by the nearby Beluchi or Turkmen tribes, but mainly rugs produced by the large Kurdish community that lived around Gouchan up to the 17th century. These rugs are made entirely of wool and have mainly Caucasian inspired geometric designs. The workmanship is good, as is the quality of the wool that comes from local breeders. In addition to rugs the Kurds made many kilims and bags embroidered with a double-weft technique.
