Karadje - Persian and oriental rug guide

KARADJE

The Karadje rugs are made in the far northern part of the country, near the city of Heriz. Often they are made by nomads and therefore, the knotting is not dense. However, they are good quality and long-lasting. The pattern is geometrical, usually a vertical sequence of stylized medallions similar to those found on Caucasian rugs, and often have a hook-motif border. Among the many colours, the predominant shades are a luminous ivory, a bright red and a deep rust - both of the latter are traditionally made from madder. Smaller geometric motifs, including stylized animals, complete the pattern. The main border, that is generally a light colour, is decorated with dentate leaves or rows of eight-pointed stars.
