YAZD

Yazd is a city in central Persia located on the road that runs between Kirman and Isfahan. It is a very old city and the last of the holy cities of Zoroastrianism the ancient religion of Persia prior to the Arab conquest that converted the country to Islam. In fact, only in the region of Kirman is this ancient form of worship still practiced, and there is a temple in Yazd dedicated to Zoroaster, it is the Mobad where the holy fire is conserved. As to rug-making Yazd production is similar to that of Kirman and has been so highly influenced that in some cases (especially old and antique items) it is difficult to determine provenance. Contemporary rugs from Yazd are usually heavier than Kirmans, their floral motifs are more classical and the colours softer and more delicate.
