AFSHAR

The Afshari are a nomadic tribe who originally came from Azerbaijan and over the centuries have lived in various regions of Iran. Today they live in the Kirman region, even if they can be found in other parts of the country as well. Ashfari rugs often have a dark, blue or brown, background that highlights the brightly, coloured geometric designs that are knotted in wool. These rugs are usually not very big, and tend to be square-shaped. The Ashfari women also make knotted bags, often with large botteh as well as all the accessories that are essential nomadic life: horse covers, saddle-covers and big kilims. There are usually decorated with the double-weft technique and are usually dark coloured, with blue as the dominant shade. The most usual decorative pattern comprises horizontal stripes with botteh, stars, rosettes and other stylized motifs.
