MESHED

The city of Meshed, located in the north-eastern part of the country is the capital of the Khorasan region. It is one of the major holy cities in Iran and pilgrims from all over the country come to visit the sanctuary of Imam Reza, the eighth saint of the Shiites. Meshed rugs are usually large and decorated with classic floral motifs on a deep red background that sometimes veers towards purple, and with large circular medallions. These are heavy rugs, the knots are not dense; they are very sturdy but not particularly prized. Recently the local artisans have begun making rugs with patterns typical of other cities such as Nain or Veramin. Since the city's production is abundant and varied there are also very fine rugs with silk warps, with very fine knotting in kork wool or even entirely in silk.
